Visiting Mexico City with Ben while he has work there, the narrator remembers the huge 1985 earthquake and how she read that rescue dogs “listen for the faint sound of a human heart” in the rubble. ¬†Pondering her own childhood and the childhoods of the street children she sees, she considers how in some ways we are all buried beneath the rubble of our lives and depend, for our rescue, on someone listening.
