It is several years since Rachel’s death. The narrator, in New Hampshire to take Lucy to her father’s, goes to Rachel’s farm to visit Rachel’s children Abby and Joshua, now eight and four years old. Their mother’s death has deeply affected both. Joshua tells the narrator, “I would like to be an egg,” which she understands as his way of saying how much he wishes he could return to his earliest connection to his lost mother.
