“Sometimes it seems that all the world is alive except me.” Perhaps inevitably, the narrator develops a depression which is to last through several years.  She takes medication, sees a mental health professional, and reads books to help her.  Ben has a telling dream about her, and Lucy is also affected.  Nature– in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin– work, friends, and all she has learned in AA help her through a slow recovery.
