It’s the summer of 1973, Watergate, and the narrator’s mother is very ill with emphysema; and though requiring continual oxygen, she protests the war in Vietnam and writes letters to President Nixon. Pop thinks Watergate and her fury over it is prolonging her life. Pop is unemployed, and the situation of this couple who had been Wiliam Maxwell’s friends in the 1920’s is a far cry from those days of charm and vitality.
