The narrator’s parents had been friends with William Maxwell– writer and for forty years editor of the New Yorker magazine–when they had all been at the University of Illinois in the 1920’s.  She recounts how she, too, becomes friends with Maxwell when her husband Ben contacts him regarding a Chicago writers’ anthology and they are invited to have tea with him at his home in New York City. Maxwell provides his memories of her parents when their lives seemed to be so promising, while she tells Maxwell how her mother died and that her father is near death.
