Lucy has gone away to college, the narrator has closed her social work practice, and it is the first September of her life that she does not have to go to work or have a child at home, returning to school — she and Ben are spending some time in Ellison Bay.   She is able to spend time working on a memoir about her mother, and the “long, clockless days” and nature evoke deep reflections about life. She is aware of the crucial importance of sobriety and the support of AA in her having been able to reach this stage of health and freedom.
