The narrator’s duties as a mother have lessened; her world has widened, and she and Ben take some trips.  Visiting San Francisco, she muses about the ephemeral attraction of alcohol, which AA has taught her how to resist, and the illusion of being “carefree”; and in Mexico City realizes that “at home, you convince yourself you’re important..but, away, ‘wonderful you’ is just some tourist on a big plaza.”  She sees that life, when her children are both grown, could include more traveling.
