An appointment with the oral surgeon prompts the narrator’s reflections about the legacy of loss from her mother and the consequences,  for her,  of her mother’s neglect of her teeth when she was a child.  Because of persistent  fatigue, the narrator worries about the possibility of a serious disease, and a hospital stay for tests ensues.  Lucy, twelve, tells her mother that she misses her because she’s “always working,” and the narrator ensures that she will not neglect her own daughter.
